Crosman steel breech on 2240
« on: May 24, 2013, 10:51:55 PM »
I just finished my 2240 build, externals anyway - performance mods still to follow.  But, wanted to share something that may be common knowledge though I haven't seen it on the forum.  After adding the long steel breech and reassembling, the 2240 would not fire.  It cocked and the trigger released the hammer, but no CO2 discharge.  Checked the cart and it wasn't pierced even after dry firing numerous times.  Hmmm, so I took it apart, but had a hell of a time removing the breech screw which was bent.  Had a spare breech screw, so double checked everything, reassembled and same result; still would't fire.  Took it apart again, and lo and behold, another bent breech screw.  Hmmm....

Then I noticed the 2240 hammer looked different than my 2300KT and 2400KT hammers - no channel milled out of the top.  Why is there a channel in the 2300 and 2400 hammers, but not the 2240?  Answer: relocation of the breech screw rearward on the long steel breech requires either shortening of the breech screw or milling of the hammer for clearance because the breech screw extends into the tube!  So, out comes the Dremel, removed about 1/8" from the breech screw, reassembled and everything works as it should.

So for any other newbs wanting to install the long steel breech on your 2240, order the 2300T hammer or be ready to trim the breech screw.

Cheers!

You could also use the long steel breech for the 1377 which has the breech screw in the old location, which is forward.

Sorry you had to learn this the hard way but it is pretty common knowledge and any of us would have been glad to advise you on the possible problems when moving to the long steel breech.

Haha - hard lessons can be the most educational. Really starting to understand how the action works by all this messing around.  And it only cost me two bent screws, not bad!

At least you had some spare screws.  Seems the most of the time when that happens there are no breech screws in the spares box and then it is the infamous wait game till they arrive.  Can be very frustrating.

Glad everything is back working.  :)

Don't feel bad i did the same thing. You can also cut a notch out of the hammer so it wont hit the screw, start were that mark is on the hammer from hitting the screw.

What breech kit did you get, Crosman or some other vendor?

The hammer on the left is a stock 2240 hammer which has the breech screw in the old location, up front in the loading area.  Hammer on the right is one from a 2250 which uses a breech with the breech screw in the new location.  Notice the notch in the hammer so that it clears the breech screw as it hangs down in the tube.

I recently purchased a 1377SBPK for my American Classic 1377c and a 2240SBPK for my BackPacker 2289g from Crosman. When I ordered them, I wasn't asked whether I needed a new type or the older type. Both had the hole for the breech screw in the forward position which is fortunately, where I needed it to be. If I had a 2240 and wanted to mount a steel breech on it, I would have ordered the 2240SBPK (at least it makes sense that is what I would have ordered). I guess that I don't have to worry about it (for the  moment, at least) but I am somewhat confused RE: the new vs the old steel breech issue. Flex

Breeches on the CCS guns appear to always come with a breech that has the new screw location.  At least that is the way it has been on the nine guns I ordered from the CCS.  Maybe things have changed.

Supposedly the rear screw location makes loading pellets easier in that they the pellets not hang up on the breech screw opening when you load.

At least one vendor I know of for after market breeches offers either screw location.
