Title: Wooden inserts on Crosman stock?
Post by: Moonray13 on January 18, 2014, 03:42:31 AM
I've installed the Crosman custom stock on my 1377 and I like it, but I've seen a few photos of the stock with what looks like a wooden insert in the skeletonized stock. Searches here and on the interwebz have not turned up anyone who makes this kind of thing. I know RB Grips used to make something like this, but they don't seem to be operating anymore. Anybody have any other ideas?

Maybe call here. Not sure if he does them but seems like there aren't many choices .  http://gunstockcarvings.com/site/28f7a0cebcab4323a405821ec7a28af0/default?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgunstockcarvings.com%2FServices.html (http://gunstockcarvings.com/site/28f7a0cebcab4323a405821ec7a28af0/default?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgunstockcarvings.com%2FServices.html)

Anyone have these inserts?  How are they held in place.  In the pics I've seen I don't see any fasteners.  Velcro, glue, bubblegum? ???

Depends where you get them from. RB grips I believe held 2 halves together and had it attached into the stock's insert hole.

I actually have ONE stock insert I might be willing to sell...It attaches through the side of the stock and at the back (drilled holes) it also has a custom cheek rest on it with knobs to adjust the height. It's stained ebony and has silver hardware...if anyone's interested PM me. I also might be able to get more, got this made custom for me, was really hard to find now that RB grips doesn't make them.

This is what it looked like before it was stained ebony with a satin finish (cheek rest too) and silver screws/rest raisers. Btw if I sell mine I'll include the Crosman stock that it's already attached to and has the holes in it for the cheek rest...so just throw it on and your good to go.

The hole in the stock if you check close has a slight taper going from the outer edge to the center . What ralph did was make two pieces with the taper so that when they went into the opening they where a little over an 1/16 " apart one side had a drilled hole with a counterbore the other side has a threaded insert so you can fit the insert then screw it together . this works evey well i have one of his inserts and you can change it from one 1399 to another

Making four (4) of them now.  Template done.  Dry fit good. Cut the "real ones".  Scribe fitting the first of them.  Been on it about 30 minutes.

There was a reason Ralph sold his plain ones for only $25.  If I oil finished these I would be nearly done, but I will finish them tomorrow or soon (whichever happens). I'll post on the Machining thread.

Mine (the first one) will be black aniline dye into the grain, then sanded and cleared with several coats of Behlen nitro cellulose (like a black burst Les Paul) with it going darker to black at the edges to match the black stock.  See, I been staying away from wood for so long that you guys may have awakened a monster!   :o Damn ya!  ;D

Some of the wood ones out there look like fake trailer paneling imo. Will try to avoid that.  ;)

I know there were three or four people on our forum that had the wooden inserts and surprised they have not chimed in.

Maybe later they will catch this thread.

RB Grips made mine, he did wonderful work. Don't know if or when he will get back to making them.
His site is still there, that is hopeful.
