Title: How do you remove the Stamped-In writing off the 2240 Tube...????
Post by: 0351_Vet on August 26, 2012, 02:44:27 AM
Has anyone tried that, or will that weaken the tube?  ???   ???

You can fill it in with a plastic filler like Bondo then smooth and paint I guess. Removing the lettering will probably weaken the tube but if you are using 12g. carts it might not be a problem.

It's so deep you'd be left with a weak tube if you sanded it off.  Best bet would be to buy an aftermarket tube without the stamped legal crap.

Can i ask why you want to do that. Don C has SS tubes with no lettering.

Yep, but DC'c tubes are like $65. Was just curious as I have seen several here that appeared to be smooth.
So whats the secert?  ??? :)

No secret Walt, body filler or green stuff, sand and paint. The roll engraving is done in mass production and is about 1/2 the wall thickness or more. Grinding or sanding it out will leave a paper thin tube.

Only other option are the aftermarket tubes.

It's the generic name for the tube of finishing body filler that goes over the bondo as a the final step. It may be the better product since you would not be filling dents just .010 to .030 of stampings.

You could fill the stampings with JB Weld epoxy. Not as easy to sand as body filler but there is no shrinkage.

You can also melt solder into the lettering then sand it smooth.

I like the solder idea Mike  :-*

That's what the real old school body repair guys used back in the day.

Walt, before I forget, you will need to sand down the sharp/high spots on the engraving before using any filler or solder. Otherwise, the edges of the engrave will still be there after you add and sand down the filler material  :D
