Title: 2240 barrel band
Post by: TomR_here on July 28, 2019, 01:45:34 PM
Is it really needed?  ???

Been modding my 2240 with a few goodies, and like the cleaner look of it without the barrel band. So hence the question.

If you have installed a steel breech you can do away with the band. None of mine have the band, including one converted to HPA with an 18 inch barrel.

Probably.
To prevent droop.
I have the original on my 2300s but for some more bling I ordered a polished (looks like SS) one.
I will probably slide the original black one back a bit and put the new one a bit further forward...
I know folks who shoot the Discovery air rifle put another band or two on their rifle barrels as well..

Steel breech installed, along with a 2260's 18" barrel properly machined where needed.

So, I have 1 not needed, and 1 maybe.

Haven't shot it since installing Steve's Super Sear & HDD/PA pieces.

Have been mounting different optics, just to see what the whole picture looks like.
Thinking the Center Point 4-16 AO/IR currently mounted is a bit much, But.......  ???
Does go good with the Crosman Carbine stock I have on there right now. Just need to contrive a cheek rest for it.
Do like the looks of the Bug-Buster on it also.

Thinking I've seen that pic before. Nice looking unit.

Looked at a lot of DIY cheek rest pics, just need to pick one and get it done.

I got the polished band in from Dave.
I like it with both:

In the powder burner rifle world, free-floating barrels are a selling point as they minimize the potential for barrel distortion RE: multiple points of contact with the stock. I suppose the same argument could be made for an air rifle. The key, as already stated, is having a solid (steel, aluminum etc.) breech in which to secure the barrel.  :-*

That is the reason the Marauders, 1720T and PRod have floaters.. :-*

If you get a barrel band, a stainless one from Don Cothran beats all of them in fit and finish.

I am waiting for (been for a long time) a stainless high breech to come into production.

He said he is making some ( single shot) in 4 to 5 weeks when I last communicated with him in the middle of July, IIRIC, and a multi shot version in 2 months.

SS is indeed heavy but it does not rust (almost) and will remain pristine in looks after a long time..If it gets scratched or scuff you an always have it beadblasted and it will look showroom condition again.

The 1701 doesn't use one and it is accurate as heck!

IMHO a barrel that sticks out further than the tube is in danger of being knocked off sight by a bump or two & therefore the band.  CO2 tubes don't expand and the barrel band does not shift the barrel.  The HPA tubes do change shape under high pressure and some feel it will change the POI if the barrel band changes the barrels aim.
So, for me, a short barreled (10") pistol W/ steel breech does not need a band.  I don't know for sure, but it seems a longer barrel would need a barrel band just to keep it (barrel) in line.  A longer barreled gun gets leaned against the wall and knocked around more than a short pistol.
Just some random thoughts... ???

I understand the concern of a long barrel getting knocked around. I'm constantly bumping the Gauntlet into things as it's much longer than the P-Rod or the 2240-18 are. With the DonnyFL KOI on it, it's around the 52 inch mark total length. Out weights them also.

I'll have to get measurements of all 3. Maybe even some pics, if I can get the camera and computer to talk to each other. That can be an issue at times.

Taking the guns out for some shooting time, I carry them close to my chest as to not hit doorways or the likes. But still manage to hit something with the Gauntlet some times. Things a beast. Keep thinking I should've went with a Marauder rifle instead.
