Being that RB is back open I think I may grab a set of grips soon for my 1337. Just not sure what style to go with. What do you guys prefer for 2 handed shooting, Sportsman profile or the Target profile? I rather have something thats more comfortable for 2 handed shooting, and also save weight wherever possible.
Another quick question as far as the pumpers....
Whats the size comparison of the RB's standard sized pumper to the stock plastic one form crosman? I'm not sure if I like the "bulkiness" of the superpumper. Although the superpumper sometimes looks nice and seems like it would make pumping alot easier, I rather save the weight and keep a more slimmed down look/feel.
I like RB's Sportsman grips though they are a little bit bulky just like the super pumper handle. I'd get a set "unfinished" and do a little shaping with a dremel and sanding work to make them fit you just right. A project I've been working on lately.
Sportsman w/ superpumper......I have 4 of them and ordered another set last week :-*
I wasn't sure which one to get on my first order, thinking the s-pump would be too bulky
then I read on some forums that some people got the standard size and switched to s-pump it fits your hand real nice :-*
You need an adjustable piston to keep the forearm lock tight or the foreman may not stay closed with no pumps in the valve
The Sportsman work great for two handed hold. Target are not as comfortable as I think they are designed for one handed hold. The super pumper is much easier to use and not heavy at all. I got mine finished, but the next ones will be unfinished and customized for me :-*
;) I like the Sportsman and the SuperPumper! Makes the gun so nice to shoot and helps my old tire shoulder's!....tnpaw :-*
I find the Sportsmanship to be too fat on the bottom. I second what Chongman said. Get them unfinished and do some shaping. I Dremeled off a lot of that thickness and they feel very nice. Also if you get the rainbow models, it's best to finish with the glossy.
The Sportsman have a lot of "meat" to work with, to get them to fit your hand.
Here you can see on the left (partially obscured-old picture) a RB grip, untouched and on the right one that I have been shaping to fit my hand. Maybe this will inspire you bust out the Dremel tool and sand paper.

It's not done yet, you'll have to wait for the Gauntlet II entry to see the finished grips :D
Looks like I will most likely go with the sportsman. I wanted to get a colored set so I won't be able to refinish them. Still thinking about it.
Anyone have a pic of the super pumper looking down on the pistol so I can get an idea of how much thicker it is?

Sorry but I don't have a gun to mount it on, here's a picture, maybe that will give you an idea of the width difference...

QuoteHey Jerry, How does that bottom piece work and can you show me some pictures? I'd like to try and make that ;)
Michael,
These are not mine. I was having JA make me a set and it never panned out. He only made 2 or three sets and then told me that they were too expensive to produce. I think one of those sets sold on a gun here very recently. I don't remember who sold or bought them but I was too broke to even try to buy them.
Look up 10M competition air pistol and you will see a lot of them in use and a few pics of the guns. You loosen the screws and raise or lower the shelf to fit the width of your hand. Also, the angle of the grips are supposed to be correct so you can just lock your wrist instead of having to use your arm muscles, just hold your arm up with shoulder.
Carl bought the recent one for sale, with those grips. I was trying to find the ad yesterday actually, but it disappeared. PMed him to see if we could get it back up. Wanted to show a friend those, am talking to him about making a set maybe.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Jerry :-*
Steve Corcoran is coming out with new grip sets for the 13xx & 22xx pistols. One particular grip set is like the ones JEBert posted about with an adjustable palm shelf. These look totally awesome.
I agree...totally awesome! Too bad such beautiful work comes at such a high price.

Nice... what's the guess on price? 10 x the cost of the 13XX?

Huge thanks Brian :-*
I have some really nice wood inbound from the UK from ped and will be using that to make a set of target grips.
My choice of grips mostly depends on what shooter I'm putting new shoes on and what my intended purpose is for the gun. If it is going to be a shelf queen then the game is wide open. But for a shooter then that requires a different mind set and different grips.
Carl
I have been using the Crosman (Benjamin) 1701 grips on several shooters lately, even took off the RB sportsmans from the 2300KT / lothar barrel shooter and went with the 1701's, Lighter and just fit better for me.
Here's a good side by side comparo of the stock (on left) grips and the 1701 on right. Smoother, feel better, look better IMO :-*
Brian I too am a big fan of the 1701 grips. They feel good when you grip them and are quite comfortable for extended shooting sessions.
Carl
Yup, and bargain priced too! :-*
Me i`m like Tater i like smooth thiner grips dislike those thumb rests thats the only problem i have with my Hatsan i`m trying to find someone to make me grips for it
Jim
Nothin makes the plastic grips better than a couple coats of bed liner!!! And to top it off, fill the cavity on inside bottom with hot glue and mount em up while the glue is still soft. It flows down, fills the gap and temporarily attaches the grips to the trigger frame. Solid feel, no shifting, good looks and nice grippy finish! I'll try and post a pic later on.
Or.. hot glue with a few lead pellets in it for weight, let it dry and mount e'm up :-*
As long as they are in stock I think I'm going to put an order for the sportsman grips with the standard size pump handle in the green/grey color.
This color pattern but for the 1337

From a recommendation here early on when I joined, I have put the 1701p grips on all my guns. Even have a pair on their way in my last order, as spares so they are ready for the next gun. At $1.74 a piece you can't beat the price.
Ernesto posted a photo of a pair he bedlined in the "what work did you just do" thread. That got me thinking, and I PMed him for tips on doing that. Here is what he wrote back:
My tips are to use outdoors when not so windy. Spray about three to four thin coats. I use it on sunny warm days and it dries in 10 minutes between coats. Dries to the touch in about 30 minutes. Try not to handle too much for 24 hours. The most important tip is to use a moist paper towel to dab the drips. Stay there between coats so you can get all the drips before they dry. Once the drip dries it's there so you got to get them before. Clean up is easy, just use water before it dries. Lay the stuff flat if possible on cardboard or something else, or you can hang things from a tree like I do but there you really need to be careful of drips because of gravity Hope this helps and let me know if you need any more help. Good luck!

Thanks for posting those tips? :-*
I use thin sticks than fit snugly inside the grip screw holes. That way you can shove one end into the ground and have the grip suspended flat, but securely off any surface. Spraying while laying directly on a surface can lead to puddling and unclean edges. I did 5 pairs one sunny afternoon last summer. It looked like some weird black flowers growing on my lawn.

Thanks!! :)
Sportsman grips in green and black are ordered from Ralph. He said about 3 weeks wait.
I have only tried a few styles......the stock 2240 grips, stock 1701P, stock 150, Josh Austin's, Ricks and RB's.....I love the looks of Ricks, but the RB's fit my hand better. The 1701P grips win the stock group. Oh, almost forgot. We had a member that cast some grips for a few of us.....they were by far the best felling grips for me. I wish I could get another set......would never let them go!
Rich
I also have a pair of those cast grips, in black and they do feel mighty good :-*

Here is the one I have always regretted selling :-[ If whomever I sold this to reads this and wants to sell it back, I am game!!!

The black ones I have were the first ones to be cast. They are "blems" but still quite nice.

Is that your pistol, or someone else on here? I figured it probably was. I hope my grips look as good as those do.
Grips arent the problem... the stock Crosman grips are good, a lot of folks make great grips in cool colors and formats :-*
the problem is a frame design that on the wrong side of good ergonomics and comfort. :-X Dont get me wrong, I'm not bashing Crosman for theyre designs. But for me to get a good hand filling, comfortable "grip" (read that: ergonomics) on the gun, I have to mod the factory frame, then build grips around that mod

Okay Mister Dan, give us a handle ;D on just what you are talking about regarding the OEM trigger frame. A picture would be worth 10,000 words.
Carl
I think I posted that elsewhere on here... um, gimme a minute....
STole this from Chongman earlier in this thread. Love the grips....
The red line is how "tall" the frame is, blue line the "length of pull from the trigger face to the rer of the frame where the web of yer hand rides, the green line how thick it is.
I maintain that the factory frame is too short in the blue dimension for my comfort. (in fairness I suposse our friend in Upstate New York have done a fair amount of recsearch and settled on that length for a reason). That shortness can be mitigated to a degree by increasing the thickness (green line) so it fills your hand more. But theres a limit to that, and Ive found two solutions for making it longer from trigger finger to web of hand. one is here on the forum
http://www.crosman-air-pistol-owners-forum.com/board/index.php/topic,10614.msg129220.html#msg129220 (http://www.crosman-air-pistol-owners-forum.com/board/index.php/topic,10614.msg129220.html#msg129220) second pic shows the use of a big gob of epoxie putty applied to a 1399 carbine stock. works for that format, as you just add the materail, let it setup and shape/finish accordingly. But in a pistol format, you could add the material to the frame, but your grips would now be the issue, as they wont mate up corretly and youve made the ergo factors worse. Not that I have any first hand knowldge of that issue.... :-[ But Ive adapted a screw on grip design to replace the putty, and not mod the frame permanently:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/dan_house/H9a%20in%20the%20whote/h9-grip3_zps94943c0d.jpg) my H9a Ive posted about. you can see the grips are bigger (ok, I know its ugly.... first draft as it were...) in the front of the gripp and the rear. By aligning the extra wood you can have a gripset that wraps around the frame and increases the dimensions outlined above
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/dan_house/H9a%20in%20the%20whote/h9-gripc_zpsdcf8e6a5.jpg)same pic, but the green outlines show the addtions better. I added the rear extension on one grip, and the front addtion on the other, Figured it would help lock them together better.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/dan_house/H9a%20in%20the%20whote/h9-4_zps026a1546.jpg) Here you can see how thick the grips are and how much more area they cover. Can also see how much too thick they are, and having both those dimensions too large is just as bad --maybe worse-- than my original complaint.
Hope that illustrates mo'better was I was trying to say..... :) (oh the HB and EB series of Benji pistols suffer the same ergo problems... similar solutions...)
Not claiming I invented this, do remember, but couldnt find again (naturally), a similar set of grips that was created this way. I'd like to see some grip makers do a better execution with better matierals.
Dan, I think you and Motorhead have a pretty good grip on this :D ....sorry I am bad for that but Carl started it....
I almost ordered a left and right hand set from RB, the idea was to use the thicker sections from both but then he told me the grain, color etc won't match
Carl, just got yer pun.... :-*
and Wyo's... :P
"that illustrates mo'better" :-* :-*
Thanks, it does!
Thank you sir for posting the pics and explaining about the "ergo factor". The green line is vital to me, also the shape of the grip as it tapers to the backstrap.
Every one's hand is different so again, shape to fit :-*
Totally agree that the length of pull is too short. I would like a pair of grips that had a blackstrap.
Fronz, its your gun. Add one if you want/need it. But be aware, off the shelf stuff probably wont work anymore, and suddenly it becomes a full on custom build ;)
