Which chrony to buy?

Many of you have chronographs.  Some of you may have owned several or had the opportunity to try out or even touch/hold before you purchased yours.  Is Chrony a good brand ?

I believe I can live without the printer for awhile, but it might be nice as an option later (if I ever have to prove twice the speed of sound with a .22 pellet, etc.). ;D  Tough crowd here, you know.  ;)

I see the F1, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma models by Chrony. I also see the Gamma + printer package for $177.  Individually, the two items would exceed $200 easily.  Is this the way to go?

FWIW, I have not contacted or had lengthy conversations with this manufacturer.   ;) ;D ;D

The two or three big names in the chronograph business all have fans. You probably cannot go wrong with any of them. I would skip the printer completely in favor of Chrono Connect software for your computer. You can purchase (or DIY) an USB interface cable for the particular chronograph you buy, download the software for a small fee, and dump all your shot strings to the hard drive. I use an Alpha Shooting Chrony (red) and Chrono connect and never want for any other functionality. I can organize my data and create graphs on the PC (download graphs generated by Chrono Connect).

Okay, that's interesting.  Can a USB thumb or flash drive be used to grab the data from the chrony? ... then go inside to the PC to upload it to the software?

I am not aware of any application as you describe.

I have a Combro chronograph and borrowed a friend's Chrony Gamma for comparison. The Combro is dead easy to use and will connect directly to a pc or Mac with an aftermarket cable. I use this feature occasionally but not as often as I thought I would.

Just my personal opinion, but I found the Chrony Gamma unit to be a total PITA to set up & break down in the limited time I used it. Not an issue if you leave it set up, say in your indoor range.  Like many other users, I had to jury-rig lights on the screens to get it to work indoors.

The positives are no resetting between shots and you don't have to mount it on the barrel like the Combro. Since I don't have front sights on either of my AGs, this is less of an issue. I also shoot outdoors almost exclusively, so attaching and using the Combro is easy and unbelievably compact.

i use my chrony outside the rods dont seem to be to much trouble, but then again i have set it up 100's of times
the indoor lighting is a pain if you dont have the right set up.the lighting can run you $5 and up depending on the method you use

Thanks for the advise, guys.

I checked out the software (cool).  I watched some Youtube and read reviews. I saved all that were of interest on Amazon, then was about to go to bed... then got a message that I had better hurry on the Gamma with printer because it is the last one.

I usually say "well just get some more, then", but I had already come across that package deal no longer available, etc. on other sites.  So hell yeah... it is ordered.  I just hope the paper for the printer (and ink?) is not some special crap that is expensive and only comes from one place.  I did not find out whether it is thermal paper or just roll paper, etc.
